Clearance Under the Keel

A Chart Gives the Least Depth. What Matters Is Whether Your Keel Clears It

When a trial reports improved symptoms, it means a number moved on a scored questionnaire. Whether that movement is large enough for a person to feel is a separate question with a separate answer, and it is almost never the one being quoted.

Our Coordinates

A measurement being real and a measurement mattering are two things. These three keep them apart.

Scale Named, Change Quantified

Where a trial reports an improvement, we say which instrument was used, what its range is, and how many points the group moved. “Improved symptoms” without a scale and a magnitude is not a result, and it is the form in which nearly every such finding reaches a consumer.

We Publish No Questionnaire

The instruments discussed here are administered and interpreted by clinicians, and we reproduce none of them. Scoring yourself is not the purpose and would not tell you anything reliable. The purpose is to let you read what a trial claims about a group, which is a different use of the same idea.

Statistical and Noticeable Are Reported Separately

A change can be statistically detectable and far too small for anyone to feel. Where researchers have established the threshold at which a change becomes perceptible, we give the finding against that threshold rather than against zero. We sell no supplement, hold no affiliate arrangement, and publish no testimonials.

None of this is a way to assess your own symptoms, and it must not be used as one. The scales described here exist inside clinical settings for a reason: a number means something only alongside an examination. If something has changed for you, that is a reason to be seen rather than scored — and a change too small to register on any instrument can still be worth mentioning to a doctor.

Health Notice: General education is all this is. There is no diagnosis in it, no prescription, and nothing that substitutes for being examined by a qualified physician. Supplements are no replacement for eating properly or for real clinical care. Take anything you intend to change — starting, stopping, raising or lowering an amount — to your doctor beforehand, and allow no exception to that where prescription medication or an existing condition is involved.
